KATHMANDU: An exhibition of prints by Artist Bhavika Dugar titled ‘Layering the city’ kicked off on Sunday at Siddhartha Art Gallery, Baber Mahal Revisited. Bhavika is also a student of Studio Arts in Wheaton College, US. 

Bhavika has used motifs such as temples, stupas, Kumari and masks of various gods, among others, signifying that her inspiration for the creations was the Kathmandu Valley and its diverse culture. To create her artwork, Bhavika has used printmaking techniques such as lithography and woodcut, where she has created prints with multiple layers of images.

Just like the title of the exhibition, her prints are also created with several layers of the same thing to enforce her idea about the city. Most of her prints have the structures of temples and stupas, placed in a spherical way as their background.

One of her prints that stand out the most is the canvas with Kumari’s print using red, blue, black and white colors. On the background of the print, there are the structures of temples and stupas. On top of them, she has created the face of Kumari followed by four other layers, apt to the title of the exhibition and signifying Kathmandu city in layers.

The exhibition reflects various layers of Kathmandu city through the use of architectural, cultural aspects and beliefs of people living in here. There are around 25 prints on display that shows Bhavika’s vision of Kathmandu city.

The exhibition is scheduled to continue till August 10.
