Bhaktapur is a town rich in culture and tradition. Keeping in line with the town’s cultural background, the newly elected mayor of the municipality had decided to give it an aesthetic makeover.

Almost all roads in Bhaktapur have not been black-topped, but are made of bricks. Bhaktapur Mayor Sunil Prajapati has announced plans to develop the town as a cultural municipality, and for that, he has proposed to replace the brick roads with stone ones. The plan was unveiled under the 36-point policy of derived from the first ever metropolitan assembly of Bhaktapur municipality.

"The intention is to develop the area in such a way so as to attract more cultural tourists," said Prajapati. In the process of giving the old city a vintage look, Prajapati wants to make sure that the houses with traditional designs are kept intact.

Prajapati added that the municipality office will also push for new houses to be built with traditional designs. He shared that landlords will be provided with various forms of support to encourage construction of new houses with traditional designs.

An engineer from the planning branch of the municipality office, Srikrishna Nyaichwai, informed that works toward the project had started after budget estimation. An estimated budget of four million rupees has been allocated for the project in the first phase. The budget will be used to construct roads made of stone.

After the election of local body representatives, Bhaktapur municipality assembly had decided to change the road structure along the main roads. The area from Chyamasingh to Bharwacho, taken as the main market, will have stone roads through Chyamasingh- Suryamadhi-Dayatraya-Inacho-Golmadhi-Sukuldhoka-Kwachhe-Taumadhi-Gahiti-Nasmana-Banshagopala-Bharwacho route.

Stone roads can currently be seen at the premises of the Five-storey Temple in Bhaktapur.
