KATHMANDU: Laxmi Khatri has been working as a curio vendor in Basantapur for about three decades now. 37-year-old Laxmi grew up around the curio stall.

It was her parents who started the shop, and Laxmi developed an interest toward it while growing up. With time, she took over the family business. Laxmi is a single mother to her son, and only member to provide for her family.

“I live with my son. My maternal home is in Kirtipur and my in-laws live in Sindhupalchowk.” She works day in and day out at the stall as it is her sole source of income. “Some days I earn around Rs 20,000, while other days I have no income at all.

My business took a hard hit after the 2015 earthquake. These days, I get a lot of Nepali tourists and my business is running because of them.”
