Begum's van kills two

CHITWAN, March 2: Two people were killed after being hit by a van in which former minister Karima Begum was travelling in Nawalparasi Saturday evening.



Begum, along with seven other members of her party, were sustained injuries in the accident. They have been admitted to Bharatpur Medical College for treatment. Begum´s condition is not critical, said doctors at the hospital. [break]



The van (Ba. 6 cha 7404), which was carrying leaders and cadres of Madheshi Janadhikar Forum (Democratic), including former minister Begum, hit a motorcycle (Na. 22 Pa 151) in Mukundapur-6 of Nawalparasi district at 6:15 pm, according to the Area Police Office of Gaindakot.



Manoj Dhakal, 33, and Apsara Dhungana, 32, residents of Bharatpur-7, who were riding the motorcycle, were injured in the accident. They breathed their last in Chitwan Medical College.



"The van hit the motorcycle as it was over-speeding," said inspector Dilli Pandey, chief of the Gaindakot area police. Begum, along with her supporters, was travelling to Triveni of Nawalparasi to attend a function.



Begum was minister of state for agriculture and cooperatives when Madhav Kumar Nepal was the Prime Minister. Begum had grabbed the headlines after slapping Chief District Officer of Parsa Durga Bhandari, which led to a series of protest programs from government employees.
