Bangladesh to purchase 50 MW of electricity from Nepal

KATHMANDU, Oct 16: Bangladesh is going to purchase 50 MW of electricity from Nepal. Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina informed about the matter during a courtesy meeting with the Ambassador of Nepal to Bangladesh, Ghanshyam Bhandari, on Tuesday.

Bangladesh has already announced that it will purchase a total of 9,000 megawatts of electricity by 2040. Bangladesh has agreed to take 500 megawatts of electricity from the Upper Karnali Hydropower Project to be built by the Indian company Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao (GMR).

Prime Minister Hasina recalled the support extended by the political and civil society of Nepal in the struggle for independence of Bangladesh and said that the bilateral relations between the two countries are excellent. She emphasized on the importance of expanding the contact network through 'BBIN' while discussing the possibilities and common cooperation between the two countries in the fields of trade, energy, tourism and climate change.

The Bangladeshi Prime Minister wished Ambassador Bhandari a successful tenure, saying that her government would continue to support him and cooperate with him. Ambassador Bhandari expressed his commitment to strengthen the relationship between the two countries during his tenure, according to a statement issued by the Nepali Embassy in Bangladesh on Tuesday.
