KATHMANDU, July 21: Tension flared in New Baneshwar as police fired teargas shells on the demonstrators as the latter were trying  to cross the prohibited zone on Saturday afternoon.

Expressing solidarity with Dr. Govinda KC’s demands and urging the government to save his life, hundreds of people gathered at Maitighar Mandala before heading to New Baneshwar.

Nepali Congress parliamentarian Gagan Thapa, Sushila Karki, Manisha Koirala, Kedar Bhakta Mathema, Shyam Shrestha, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, Karishma Manandhar along with others are participating in the rally.

Dr KC’s key demands include passing Medical Education Ordinance brought by the Sher Bahadur Deuba government as Medical Education Bill without making any changes.

The ordinance includes Mathema committee’s recommendations, such as banning opening of new medical colleges in Kathmandu for 10 years, restricting a university from issuing more than five affiliations and requiring medical colleges to run their own hospitals for at least three years before getting affiliations.

Dr. KC is on his 22nd day of his fast-unto-death demanding reforms in the medical sector.
