Bagmati Hiking for World Toilet Day 2018

Paschim Paaila and Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) jointly organized ‘Hiking along Bagmati Corridor’ on Saturday. The hiking started from Sundarijal and ended at Narayantar. It was organized on the occasion of World Toilet Day, 2018. The objective of the program was to observe the status of Bagmati River from its source to the core city, examining the flow of faecel sludge into river water.

As per a press statement, total of 17 youths and WASH activists actively participated in the hiking program. They also tested the water quality of the river, sharing ideas and expanding the network for better sanitation and environmental health.

Hiking along Bagmati corridor started from the Sundarijal bus-park, uphill to the dam station. Participants in the hiking, on the way to Narayantar, were also engaged individually for photo competition, creative idea sharing in a group for advocacy and network building among the students and WASH activists.

Participants tested pH, ammonia and nitrate of water from Bagmati River using ENPHO Field Water Test Kit. Water from the river was tested at four points: Dam site, agricultural site of Sundarijal, Uttarbahini temple and Narayantar. The test result showed a decrease in pH value and an increased value of ammonia and nitrate from the source point was observed at Narayantar.
