KATHMANDU, July 17: Vimukthi Jayasundara, a Sri Lankan filmmaker who had won the prestigious Caméra d’Or in 2005 for his debut feature film ‘The Forsaken Land’, is in Kathmandu. Upon the invitation of Oscar International College (College of Film Studies), Jayasundara would be taking a master- class for film students and cinema enthusiasts from July 18 to July 22 at Oscar College in Sukhedhara.

His master-class would mainly focus on film direction and the vernacular of World Cinema. Jayasundara has directed six feature length films and two short films. His latest film ‘Dark in the White Light’ was nominated for a Golden Leopard in the Locarno International Film Festival 2015.

“In Nepal cinema is always taken as a medium of communication or a form of entertainment. From Vimukhti’s master-class we want to emphasize the wider discourse of cinema as an art form,” Binod Paudel, CEO and Principal of Oscar College, said to Republica.

The college has been regularly inviting international filmmakers like Israeli director Dan Wolman and Indian film editor Namrata Rao as part of their master-class series where students are encouraged to watch and appreciate cinema from a global perspective and with wider range of cinematic possibilities.
