At least 6 killed, 6 missing as flooding inundated Itahari(Update)

ITAHARI, August 12: At least five persons were killed and six others went missing as the   flooding  caused by continuous heavy rain inundated Itahari market zone and its surrounding areas.

The deceased have been identified as Mala Shah, 40, Maya Rai, 32, Rupesh Rai, 3, Rupsani Rai, 8, Anita Dhimal, 35, and Iswor Sunuwar, 40. Those who have gone missing include Asha Devi Rai, Ram Kumar Rai, Minesh Rai, Khusi Rai, Chanda Tamang and nine year old baby girl.

The details of the physical and human damages caused by inundation are yet to be ascertained.

Houses in Gairigaun, Bus Park and the areas surrounding the office of Eastern Division of Nepal Army have been badly hit by floods. Continuous rain coupled with the flooding in the Shera and Budhi rivers has caused inundation of Itahari market and the areas surrounding it.

The flooding has disrupted the operation of basic services as communication and transport.  

According to Rajesh Giri , the acting Chief District Officer at District Administration Office, Inaruwa, the floods have also inundated the Nepal Army camps completely. “Since Nepal Army personnel under Eastern Division are busy rescuing themselves, they are not in a position to rescue civilians”, said Giri.
