GORKHA, June 18: The asphalt on the road from Katusghari to Baguwachhetra in Gorkha district that was blacktopped only a month ago has come off. Of the 10.2 km stretch of the road, only 4.2 km has been constructed so far.

The Earthquake Emergency Support Project Dhading-Gorkha Road Construction Association had awarded the road construction contract. The road project  is being funded through a loan from the Asian Development Bank. The construction slackened after the contractor company, Nepal Adarsha Tamang JV, was reluctant to speed up the construction work worth Rs 300 million.

Although the blacktopping of the 10.2 km long road was planned to be completed by June 22, the work could not be completed within the deadline due to delay by the contractor.

"As vehicles began operating on the freshly-blacktopped roads before it was set, the asphalt came off. We are planning to reconstruct wherever required,” said Ashok Devkota, an engineer of the project.

As the project deadline neared without the completion of the work, it was proposed that the deadline be extended by 44 days for the completion of the construction.

“If workers carry out their works on a daily basis, the remaining construction shall take about two weeks to complete. The contractor has stopped the construction work for the past few days and the deadline extension is yet not confirmed,” said Devkota.

Meanwhile, Bajraguru Synergy JV has taken over the construction of the 5.2km road from Phinam to Katusghari. “Only a 200m stretch of this road section remains to be constructed," added Devkota.
