Army maintains winning run in football

DHARAN, Dec 26: Tribhuvan Army Club continued its winning streak in men’s football event at Seventh National Games on Sunday registering 1-0 win over Mid-western Region while another departmental side Armed Police Force (APF) played goalless draw against Far-western Region.

In the group B match held at ANFA Technical Center, national team striker Nawayug Shrestha’s goal in the 6th minute was enough for Army to seal the second victory in the group. Nawayug scored beautiful goal from 20 yard. Mid-western Region was limited to the 10 players for last 25 minutes after Krishna Ranabhatt was shown red card by referee for fouling on Army’s defender Suman Aryal. 

Army couldn’t utilize some good opportunities to widen the lead most notably when Nawayug failed to direct the ball to the net from short range in 28th minute. Similarly Army had another chance to make 2-0 when Bharat Khawas’ scorcher was denied by Mid-western Region’s goalkeeper Pritam Khadka in the 87th minute.

 In the second match of the group, APF and Far-Western Region settled for goalless draw after both sides failed to utilize the goal scoring chances. APF missed early chance to take the lead in 6th minute when Ram Kumar Kumal failed to score from short range. 

Likewise, departmental side had another opportunity to score in 31st minute but national team’s defender Aditya Chaudhary’s powerful shot was denied by Far-western Region’s goalkeeper Tikendra Thapa. APF was unlucky not to produce a goal in the stoppage time of the second half when Rajendra Rawal’s shot hit woodwork. 

Earlier, Far-western Region also missed the chance to score in the seventh minute but Mani Ram Chaudhary failing to finish in the one versus one against the APF goalkeeper Amrit Chaudhary prevented regional team to move ahead in the match. 

In the 61st minute regional team had another opportunity to score when Jiwan Chaudhary attempted a shot from close range but he was denied after APF goalie Amrit. 

After the draw, APF has extended its points tally to four from two matches to sit at the second position in the group while Army collected six points from similar number of the matches. Far-western Region which has lost one match and drawn another has one point while Mid-western is yet to open its account. 

On Monday, Nepal Police Club will take on Central Region in group A match while the second match will be between Western Region and home team Eastern Region.
