Rs 25 million goes in vain on Ranipokhari reconstruction

Around Rs 25 million used to reconstruct the Rani Pokhari temple has gone in vain after Kathmandu Metropolis decided to rebuild the heritage using traditional materials following its ‘new decision’ on April 21. A dispute between locals, Department of Archaeology, and Kathmandu Metropolis over use of modern materials had stalled reconstruction for three months. Reconstruction of the 400 year old temple is expected to start from May 15.  

 

Increasing suicide rate alarms Baitadi people

Increasing suicide rate in Baitadi has raised alarm after 26 people, including 12 females, committed suicide within the first nine months current fiscal year. Those committing suicide consist from teenagers as young as 12. Amid increasing trend, police have taken an initiative to educate and aware children in schools, while experts have highlighted the need for ensuring stable mental health to reduce suicide rates.

 

Study team formed over rising death of rhinos

The Department of National Park has initiated a study to investigate increasing deaths of rhinos. Since 1998, the Chitwan National Park alone witnessed untimely death of 269 rhinoceros. From 2014 – 2017, 53 rhinos were reported dead in the Park.   The study will examine causes of deaths while also looking into grassland, habitat and water resources among others. At present, there are 605 rhinos in the Chitwan National Park.

Without health workers, women forced to give birth at home

Women in Karmarong rural municipality, Mugu are forced to give birth at home as the only functional health post with maternal service is without skilled birth attendants and auxiliary nurse midwives.  While most of the staffers at the health post are on leave, local authorities are ‘unaware’ about the incidents.  

'Invisible power’ continues to banish women during menstuation

While women and girls in Jajarkot are aware that the government has criminalized the practice of Chhaupadi, they continue to practice it due to fear of ‘invisible power’ that could bring bad omen.  To uproot this harmful cultural practice, the local government in the district has come up with plans and programs.  

ISIS suicide bomber kills at least 31 in Kabul

ISIS has claimed responsibility for suicide blast that killed at least 31 at a voter registration centre in Kabul. Another 54 people were wounded in the Afghanistan capital, a health ministry spokesman said. A bomber on foot approached the centre where officials had been issuing identity cards as part of a process of registering voters for the election scheduled for October.
