Apply it right

The most basic thing you can control while applying makeup to make sure you don’t look like a clown when you step out of your house is the lighting. The most basic thing you can control while applying makeup to make sure you don’t look like a clown when you step out of your house is the lighting. Most of the offices have harsh fluorescent light that emits a bluish hue so sheer colors are what you should stick to during the day. During the evenings however, apply bold contrasting colors for the most restaurants are dimly lit and pale colors could make you look washed out. If you don’t have access to the same kind of light you are going into, your safest bet is to apply makeup in natural light as it is the most balanced of all lights. Make sure that the source of light you are facing makes your face light up evenly. If one side of your face gets more light than the other, you will notice that your makeup varies slightly on two sides of your face.

If you do not get enough natural light in your room or if you have to apply makeup at night, a warm white light from a 75-100 watt bulb should do the trick.

This incandescent light creates a warm golden color to the complexion which ensures you don’t over-apply bronzer or powder. However, even when you have the correct lighting available, remember that placement of the light is very important. The light should always shine directly in front of your face, not from sideways and never from behind. If you have no other options, LED lights also work, as their illumination is very similar to the suns’. Makeup mirrors with LED lights are great if you don’t have natural lighting.

Day makeup

The rule of thumb for applying sunscreen is that the higher the elevation, the more SPF you need. For Kathmandu Valley, the minimum SPF you need is 30 which you should reapply every three to four hours. Always start your make-up with a layer of sunscreen after which you should apply moisturizer and foundation. During the winter, make sure your foundation doesn’t become too matte and mix it with some extra moisturizer if you have to in order to avoid dry, flaky skin. In fact, she suggests doing away with all kinds of matte makeup during the winter.

The arsenal of products you need for your everyday looks are eyeliner, kohl, eyelash curler, mascara, eyebrow kit, blush, and a lipstick. For everyday use, wear light colors of eye makeup where you can choose to have either a matte look or a shimmery look. Start out with a neutral base color and then build up to it by adding deeper tones and creating some depth. Groom your eyebrows and fill it in sparsely with your eyebrow pencil to reach the desired level of fullness. You do not want to be too heavy handed with this process. After this, apply a thin line of eyeliner to make your eyes pop and apply kohl. Curl your eyelashes and apply a coat or two of mascara to open up your eyes. Be light handed when you apply blush, you only want to give yourself a healthy tint on your cheek and not have an unblended circle. Apply your lipstick and viola, you are ready to go!

Night makeup

The difference in the lighting is all that it takes to make you alter your makeup dramatically. For the nights, you should forget the nude shades and grab your dramatic colors to make sure you don’t look pale. You need to add a few more items to the arsenal of aforementioned make-up; a contour palette, bronzer, glitters, concealer, fake eyelashes and a highlighter.

Pay closer attention to your eye makeup when you are getting ready for a night out. Whether you want to do a smoky eye or a blend out a loud color with nude shades, start your makeup application by first applying the basics: sunscreen and moisturizer. Before applying the foundation, apply a layer of primer to your skin. A primer protects your skin from any kind of makeup damage by providing a layer of protection and also helps to leave your makeup looking smooth and flawless.

Night Makeup

Apply concealer all over your eyelid and eye bags to even out the skin tone and powder it to let it set. After applying your eye makeup, don’t forget to blend it in well. A beauty hack for when applying dark or glittery eye shadow is to apply a thick layer of loose powder that you can brush away afterwards. This makes it easy for you to get rid of any stray eye shadow that falls on your cheeks easily without harming your base makeup.

Apply a very thin line of eyeliner and proceed to sticking the fake eyelashes on. You can skip this step if you want to but it will just help you achieve the dramatic flair you want for a night out. When the glue dries, apply another layer of eyeliner to help the lash line blend in. Curl your eye lashes and the fake lashes and apply mascara to bind them together and make sure they don’t separate and make you look funny. Contour your face and apply bronzer to make your cheeks pop. If you want to apply highlighter, be very careful and observe the places where the light falls on your face naturally and highlight accordingly. Apply a dark lipstick and you are ready for a night of fun.
