KATHMANDU, April 26: The Supreme Court has issued an interim order in the name of the government to ban 34,000 citizenships that were distributed between 1997 and 1998. It has also barred the government not to grant citizenship to children born by descent.

The court’s order comes after a division bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana and Justice Purushottam Bhandari said that the citizenships were distributed by violating the laws.

On April 16, Advocate Borna Bahadur Karki had filed a writ petition claiming that the government was yet to scrap the citizenships despite the court’s order for the same in 2001-2002 AD. That year, the court had ordered the government to scrap those certificates citing they were distributed illegally.
