An authentic Italian eatery

Freddo means cool or cold in Italian and when you step inside Freddo Café you will come to see that the quaint little café really lives up to its name. Freddo means cool or cold in Italian and when you step inside Freddo Café you will come to see that the quaint little café really lives up to its name. It might have been just three months that Freddo Café has relocated at Thamel (moving from its previous Kamal Pokhari location) but it’s already a popular hub among the crowd that throngs to Thamel on a daily basis.

And it’s easy to deduce why. Having upgraded their menu to an exclusive Italian cuisine, Freddo Café offers delicious and wholesome food that you can’t find anywhere in the city. The supervisor of the café, Deepak Chaudhary, claims that the Freddo team has worked relentlessly on the menu and hasn’t left a single stone unturned to see to it that the café delivers authentic Italian food. Though it was the manager of the café who came up with the idea of turning Freddo Café into an Italian eatery, each and every individual has done his/her part to ensure quality hospitality and food.

It’s all evident from the way the place is set up to the attention the staff pays to details while serving you. Besides Chaudhary and the manager, Freddo Cafe currently employs eight other staff including the chef and the managing team. “Our primary focus is the quality of food, not just its taste but also the hygiene aspect of it,” says Chaudhary adding that till date they have never received a negative comment or feedback regarding their food. He confesses that sometimes the customers claim the café is quite stuffy inside but also adds that they are working on solving this issue, and that it’s a minor glitch, nothing else.

The good thing is that Freddo Café, despite being an Italian eatery, doesn’t just offer Italian food. They also have a wide variety of desserts, coffees, and Nepali dishes in their menu. Chaudhary mentions that the pizzas and the sadheko platter at Freddo Cafe are very popular and that customers often come back for these items.

Before you place your order, you can also take a look at their Facebook or Instagram page to see what their food looks like. Since Freddo Café has also collaborated with some prominent Nepali food bloggers like @nepal.food, you can also find reviews there. Whatever you choose to do, just make sure you try their food, especially their momos, to know what you have been missing out on.

Caesar salad

Rating:     *****

Price: Rs 325

Made with mixed lettuce, smoked chicken, bacon, sautéed parmesan cheese, and bread, this salad is one of Freddo Cafe’s signature dishes. It’s a relatively simple dish and a tasty option that is healthier than most of the dishes available at most cafes around town. The modest portion of the salad that is served is quite filling for one. Be quick to finish this though because Chaudhary mentions that if left for too long, the taste of the salad deteriorates because the ingredients get too moist.

Chicken momo sadheko

Rating: *****

Price:     Rs 225

This is, hands down, the best sadheko momo we have tasted so far. If there is one thing you have to order at Freddo Café, it has to be this momo. It’s simply mouth watering. The momo in itself is very tasty and the chef adds in a mixture of tomato, garlic, onion, ginger and lemon to make it ‘sadheko’ and end result is a masterpiece that will leave you craving for more.

Mexicana pizza

Rating: ***

Price: Rs 515

This one was a bit of a letdown. It’s not a bad pizza by any means but after tasting the first two dishes, we were expecting something that tasted better – especially from a place that prides itself for its pizzas. The Mexicana pizza incorporates smoked chicken pieces, sweet corn, black pepper, tomato, onion, capsicum, jalapeno peppers, and olives. Adding some Tabasco sauce and a little bit more black pepper significantly improves its taste.
