KATHMANDU, Feb 14: The government has decided to appoint AIG Dinesh Chandra Pokharel as acting Inspector General of Nepal Police by amending a provision of the existing Police Act.

A cabinet meeting held at Baluwatar on Monday decided to amend a legal provision that barred any police officer from technical department of Nepal Police from becoming the chief of the organization.

“The cabinet has decided to appoint Pokharel as the acting chief of Nepal Police by amending Clause 46 of the Police Regulations 2071 BS,” Minister for Law and Justice Ajay Shankar Nayak told Republica.

As all the 11 Additional Inspector Generals (AIGs) retired along with the IGP Upendra Kanta Aryal on the ground of term limit, the government was forced to choose one of the Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) for the post of police chief.

On Sunday, the government had appointed Deputy Inspector General Jay Bahadur Chand as the successor of Aryal.  But the Supreme Court issued a stay order against the appointment, forcing the government to make another decision until the court issues a final verdict.

This is the first time in the history of Nepal Police that a DIG has been directly promoted to the post of IGP.
