KATHMANDU, June 23: Afghanistan secured a historic victory in the ongoing Super 8 match of the ICC T-20 World Cup.


Afghanistan defeated Australia by 21 runs at Arnos Vale Stadium, claiming their maiden Super 8 win.

After losing the toss, Afghanistan batted first and posted a total of 148 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. In pursuit of 149 runs, Australia faltered, managing only 127 runs with 4 balls remaining.


Opening batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz led Afghanistan with 60 runs, supported by Ibrahim Zardan's 51 runs, setting a challenging target for Australia.


In the bowling department, Gulbadin Naib took four wickets, while Naveen Ul Haq claimed three wickets, leading Afghanistan's strong defensive effort. Captain Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Azmatullah Omarzai contributed 1 wicket each.


Despite Glenn Maxwell's 59-run innings, Australia struggled to build partnerships, unable to match Afghanistan's disciplined bowling attack.


This defeat marks Australia's first loss in the current season, while Afghanistan celebrate their inaugural victory in the Super 8 phase.
