KATHMANDU, Aug 4: Lawmakers, civil society members, and independent activists expressing solidarity with Dr Govinda KC’s demand of the impeachment of Lokman Singh Karki, chief commissioner of Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), have vowed to intensify their campaign.

Civil society members and independent individuals associated with the ‘Solidarity for Dr KC Alliance’, during an interaction program held in the capital on Thursday to formulate strategies to give momentum to their campaign, said they would meet senior leaders of major political parties and pressurize them to initiate the impeachment process against CIAA chief Karki as demanded by Dr KC.

Nepali Congress lawmaker Gagan Thapa urged civil society members and individuals associated with the alliance to give pressure from all sectors so that it will compel political leadership to take initiative for the impeachment process in the parliament. “Go and meet all the senior leaders with all the facts and logics for why CIAA chief Karki should be impeached. It will definitely help to pressurize them to move forward the impeachment process,” he said.

Thapa said that he and other two lawmakers who have registered an urgent motion of public important in the parliament against CIAA chief Karki are making efforts to lure other lawmakers to participate in the discussion over the impeachment of Karki so that the parliament will be forced to make some significant decisions regarding the issue.

“We expect that over 200 lawmakers will participate in the deliberation on the motion. We believe that the discussion will definitely help us to move the impeachment process forward,” he said.

He appealed the participants in the program to ask lawmakers of their constituency to partake in the discussion over the motion in the parliament. “I would like to urge you to request lawmakers of your constituency to take part in the discussion. Only in this way, the issue of the demand of impeachment against CIAA chief Karki can gain attention,” he said.

Likewise, lawmaker of CPN (Maoist Centre) Aman Lal Modi said that he would strongly raise the issue of impeachment against CIAA chief Karki if a sub-committee formed by the parliamentary Good Governance and Monitoring Committee to study whether Karki has really breached laws as CIAA chief in various times or not finds him guilty. Modi is a member of the parliamentary committee.

“I have been drawing attention of the parliamentary committee that Karki has been ignoring rule of law and other constitutional provisions. But my concerns never got priority until Dr KC launched hunger strike against Karki,” he said.

Indra Aryal, representative of Nepal Human Rights Association, urged activists to intensify the campaign to compel political leadership to initiate the process of impeachment against Karki.
