KATHMANDU, Nov 3: At around midday, last week, telephone rang and Sabita Magar answered the call from the school where her six-year-old daughter -- Priya (name changed) -- was studying in kindergarten. Over the phone was the schoolteacher, who asked her to rush to the school immediately.

The moment Sabita arrived in the school, she found her daughter lying unconscious-a sight shocking to behold. Priya was enrolled in UKG at white Field Academy, at Seuchatar-2. [break]

“After finding her in unconscious state, we rushed Priya to Kanti Children Hospital, but the problem was not diagnosed,” Sabita´s husband Ram, a taxi driver, lamented.

The child was later brought home but what had happened to her that day remained a complete mystery.

The problem came to light only after the girl was brought home when she got scared off the landlord´s son and screamed.

“When asked she said that she had been sexually abused,” the girl´s father said. Magar raised the issue with the house owner Prem Chandra Mijar. But his son Krishna denied the charges.

The landlord had cautioned the girl´s parents against sharing the information with others and dismissed it as ´trivial thing´. However, Ram shared it with his fellow taxi driver, who in turn informed the police.

When interrogated, Mijar´s son Krishna confessed the crime.

Magars are not the isolated cases of how children are falling prey to sexual abuses. A nine-year-old Asha Bishokarma (name changed) was sexually abused by her neighbor in Manamaiju-7.

Asha was raped when she was alone in her room.

Gopal Dhital (45), a mason called her, offering her a Tika and money. When she went to her room, he locked the door and raped her. He had threatened to kill her if she disclosed the matter to others. The child´s parents had gone elsewhere.

This incident came to light only after her parents saw their child reportedly bleeding. The police, however, nabbed the culprit recently. The girl has been kept at CWIS hostel and is undergoing treatment.

“When we saw purulent discharge from her genitals, we admitted her in hospital,” Pradeep Dongol, a monitoring officer of CWIS, said. She is now being treated with antibiotics, he added.

These are just the representative cases. There are many such unreported cases due to the associated myths and social taboos attached to sex. Police record showed that circle of acquaintances accounted for 67 percent of the sexually abused children and 15 percent by the neighbor.

“Unknown does not have access with the children. So every parent must be aware to protect the child from such heinous crime,” Milan Dherel, executive director of CWIS, said. ce.

Four-year-old raped

JAJARKOT: A four-year kid was raped by an unknown at Khalanga VDC-2, Thapleon, on Tuesday.

The victim, Pushpa Singh, who was sleeping at her maternal uncle´s home was taken to the jungle nearby and raped, Hemanta Bahadur Shah, a local said.

His neighbor found the child in unconscious state and informed the family.

The child is now being treated at Mission Hospital, Chaurjahari, Rukum. According to Jhalak Sharma, district health chief, the condition of the child is reported to be critical.
