KATHMANDU, March 8: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has said that it is necessary to create public awareness in a creative manner to discourage abuse and violence against women.

Conveying greetings today on the occasion of 113th International Women's Day, he said that cases of abuse, gender discrimination and violence against women should be eradicated, strict action should be taken against the perpetrators and appropriate compensation should be provided to the victims.

Chairman Oli mentioned that oppressive remnants such as witchcraft, chaupadi, dowry, child marriage and caste discrimination remain due to bad practices under the guise of ignorance and corruption.

“Due to the lack of awareness of the society, the violence and oppression against women remain in the society. Legal arrangements and efforts of the state alone cannot eliminate such oppressions. For that, social awareness is needed,” he said in a message.

He said that the participation and leadership of women in the political, economic and social transformation of Nepal has been praised by the world. Oli added that the fact that Nepali women have been at the forefront of all movements of change, including the historical people's movement, has been written in golden letters in Nepal’s political history. He mentioned in the message that equal participation is very important. "I sincerely call on all sisters and brothers to join together in the campaign to end violence against women by developing a culture of treating women and sisters with respect and basically emphasizing on education," said Oli.

Chairman Oli has said that the efforts to make the country directionless through political instability and to weaken the campaign carried out by UML for the prosperity of the nation and the happiness of the people are still going on. He said in the message, “We need to overcome the tendency to weaken the national independence and the strength of the country by taking undue advantage of instability and economic crisis.
