A classical gig to promote traditional music

A classical gig to promote traditional music

KATHMANDU, July 30: Uma Maheshwar Sangeet Pratisthan, Kritipur, hosted a classical and devotional musical concert at the premises of the Uma Maheshwar temple this Saturday.  The event marks the second edition of the classical music event.

Percussionist Raju Maharjan, the coordinator of the event, stated that the traditional and classical music of Nepal was slowly fading, and Uma Maheshwar Sangeet Pratisthan had been working to revive and promote the music genre. He added, “We are not putting enough effort to preserve traditional music despite its rich history. So, to promote our classical roots, we organize similar events on a monthly basis."

The event opened with a Bhakti Sangeet (Devotional music) which featured elderly locals of Kirtipur. Patan’s Badhya Siromani Gharna Sangeet School followed the opening act and left the crowd enthralled with their group violin recital. 18 violin players between the ages of 11 to 20 years played the instrument per the instruction of Shailendra Shakya.

Similarly, solo tabla performances by several tabla veterans from Kritipur and Kathmandu also captivated the mass. The 30-minute-long music recital progressed from slow-beat grooves to fast-paced solos. The musical event ended with a dual of tabla player Jagannath Dhaubadal, and flutist Nagendra Rai. The entire event had the audience members, comprising locals of Kirtipur, and classical music buffs enthralled by the dynamic grooves that were presented throughout the show.

Aiming to give continuity to the program, the organizers plan to conduct a similar event on 25th of August.
