KATHMANDU, Oct 5: Resident doctors of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Maharajgunj on Monday held a protest rally in the capital city expressing solidarity with senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC.

The agitating physicians took to streets and marched up to the main road at Maharajgunj from TUTH to exert pressure on the government to meet the demands raised by Dr KC, who has been staging hunger strikes for the past 22 days. Resident doctors holding placards asked the government to address the demands raised by Dr KC.

Dr KC is on his 22nd day of the 19th round of hunger strike seeking reforms in Nepal’s medical education sector. He resumed a fresh hunger strike alleging that the government failed to honor the agreement reached with him in the past to bring reform in Nepal’s medical sector.

According to a doctor involved in his treatment, Dr KC’s health is deteriorating every day. “Dr KC is having chest pain, and has been put on oxygen support,” Dr Toshima Karki told Republica.

Dr KC hasn’t been able to speak since Friday evening. “Dr KC has also refused to be treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) despite his worsening health condition,” she added.

Here are the photos taken by Republica photojournalist Monika Malla on Monday afternoon.
