His health deteriorates, government silent about his demands 

KATHMANDU, Sept 20: Dr Govinda KC has been on hunger strike for the last six days in Jumla, demanding a number of reforms in the medical sector. His heartbeat has been irregular, according to the doctors involved in his treatment. According to Dr Prabin Kumar Giri, who is involved in monitoring Dr KC’s health, his heartbeat is highly irregular. He is feeling dizzy, has muscle cramps and is in weak health, reported Dr Giri.  

According to Pritam Subedia (@PritamSubedi), Dr KC was forcefully taken to a hospital Saturday night. “Pritam, I have been abducted,” Dr KC told Pritam. 

In a video posted on Solidarity for Prof. Govinda KC page on Facebook, Dr KC is heard saying that he will refuse all sorts of medical treatments. “Instead of fulfilling my demands, I have been abducted. I will refuse all kinds of treatment.” 

He had horrible chest pain Friday night and struggled to breathe, said doctors involved in monitoring his health. His blood pressure is severely low. 

A team of doctors from the Karnali Academy of Health Sciences has been attending the doctor three times a day. Dr Giri said that the team of doctors have advised him to go to hospital for treatments. “His health is deteriorating,” said Giri. 

“He cannot walk. He has not let us monitor hsi sugar levels, and hasn’t let us use IV fluids. We are worried about his health,” added Giri. Low sugar levels might induce complications in other organs, and invite infection, say doctors. Along with Dr Giri, Dr Anupmangal Samal and Dr Sabina Thapa are involved in his treatment. 

He used to have good health for many days during previous hunger strikes, but he is not doing well this time around, say the doctors in Jumla. The government hasn’t shown any inclination to fulfill Dr KC’s demands. 

His demands include introducing an MBBS program at Karnali Academy of Health Sciences, and access to health to all. He started his hunger strike six days ago at Babiramst Temple in Ranichaur, Jumla. Bibeksheel Nepali and Sajha Party have demanded that the government fulfill the doctors demands at the earliest. Bibeksheel Nepali party has been protesting in Kathmandu, urging the government to fulfill the doctor’s demands.
