KATHMANDU, Sept 15: The government has decided to recommend the name of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Vice Chairman Bam Dev Gautam to appoint him as a member of the National Assembly.

A cabinet meeting held at the official residence of Prime Minister K P Oli in Baluwatar on Monday evening made a decision to this effect. President Bidya Devi Bhandari will make the appointment as per the recommendation made by the government.

Earlier, the party's Secretariat meeting had unanimously decided to recommend the name of Gautam for the appointment as a member of the upper house. The seat has remained vacant since former finance minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada’s two-year term expired some six months ago.

Gautam had been making a number of attempts to become a lawmaker of the federal parliament after he faced defeat in the parliamentary polls from Bardiya-1 to Nepali Congress (NC) candidate Sanjya Gautam in December 2017.

NC candidate Gautam defeated the three-time home minister by a slim margin of 727 votes. NCP Vice Chairman Gautam is known to have made at least seven attempts to become a lawmaker of the federal parliament since he lost the election.
