KATHMANDU, July 31: The Embassy of Nepal in Malaysia has lodged a complaint with local authorities seeking action against a person who mercilessly beat up a Nepali security guard working there.

The embassy lodged a complaint after a video that appeared to show a Malaysian man indiscriminately hitting a Nepali guard with a baton went viral.

“The Embassy of Nepal, Kuala Lumpur notes with concern the recent video trending on social media regarding the assault on a security guard in Malaysia. A police report has been initiated for further investigation,” wrote the Embassy on its facebook page on Friday.

The Embassy has also urged all those who have detailed information about the incident to provide them through its email at eonkualalumpur@mofa.gov.np or its hotline at 016-2472777.

In the one-minute video posted online, a man speaking Bahasa Melayu is seen using a baton to beat the guard who does not retaliate. “What’s your problem?” he is heard saying to the guard as he continues beating up indiscriminately with a baton. “Are you messing around? You come here to look for work, not problems.”

The man is also seen punching the guard in his face while shouting at him toward the end of the video clip that has gone viral in social media.

The incident appears to have occurred a few weeks ago as it was initially posted in facebook by a username Sq soul7 on July 7, according to Malaysian news reports. The video went viral after it was subsequently posted in twitter recently.

Soon after the video went viral in social media, hundreds of social media users both in Nepal and abroad reposted it and demanded stringent action against the person mercilessly beating the helpless Nepali man. They have not only vented against the Malaysian authorities, but also the political leaders at home.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) has called for police to track down and arrest the person caught on the video. The MTUAC has said the “abuse was unacceptable.”

Separately, Security Industry Association of Malaysia Committee member Datuk Basant Singh has lodged a police report over the video, according to a news report published in Malay Mail. However, he said he has no further information about the incident and could not identify the security firm involved based on the guard’s uniform, the report said.
