Two including a policeman injured as police fire shots in Sunsari to seize smuggled goods

SUNSARI, July 18: Two including a policeman were injured in the Ghuski area of Sunsari district when police fired shots on a group of smugglers to seize smuggled goods in their possession on Friday night.  

The incident took place at around 9 pm when the Armed Police Force personnel tried to bring a group of smugglers under control, acting on a tip-off that the group was carrying smuggled goods.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police, Krishna Dhakal, the APF team was forced to fire shots after the smugglers attacked the police personnel with sticks and stones. "They even tried to snatch weapons from the APF team," Dhakal said. In the incident, APF constable Jiwaraj Bishankhe has sustained head injuries while local resident Sawaj Ansari has been injured.

The injured duo was rushed to BPKIHS, Dharan, on Friday night. APF constable Bishankhe was then taken to APF regional hospital in Pakali, Itahari while local resident Ansari is undergoing treatment at BPKIHS.

Following the incident, police have stepped up security in the area. As many as 90 police personnel have been deployed in the area where the violent clash erupted between the smugglers and APF team.

A similar incident took place on Thursday in Dewangunj Municipality of Sunsari district. Police fired shots on a group of five motorbikers who were carrying weapons which were seized by the police. In the incident, two persons were injured. Three accomplices of the alleged smugglers managed to escape.
