GAUHATI, India, Nov 19:  Police say rebels have ambushed two Indian army vehicles and killed at least three soldiers and critically wounded four others in India's remote northeast.

Police officer Mukesh Aggarwal says the attack took place early Saturday in a forest area near Pengeri, a town 600 kilometers (400 miles) east of Gauhati, the Assam state capital.

Aggarwal said the rebels used homemade bombs to stop the army jeep and a truck and attacked the soldiers with rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47 assault rifles. A helicopter evacuated the four wounded soldiers to a nearby army hospital.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police suspect the involvement of the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) in the attack. The group has been fighting for decades for independence from India.
