KATHMANDU, Mar 4: Prime Minister KP Oli is undergoing a second kidney transplant on Wednesday, at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH).

Oli and the kidney donor, Samikshya Sangraula, have already been admitted to the hospital to undergo the medical procedures required before a kidney transplant. Sangraula is Oli’s relative.

A team of doctors led by Premraj Gyawali will be involved in  the transplant surgery. The chiefs of the urology and nephrology departments at hospitals and senior doctors will assist Dr Gyawali.

Oli’s personal physicians – Dr Dibya Singh Shah and Dr Dilip Sharma – and doctors involved in his previous surgeries will also be part of the kidney transplant team, according to Surya Thapa, press advisor to the prime minister.

Other Nepali doctors involved in Oli’s previous health checkups and surgeries are likewise included in the kidney transplant team. Last November, Oli had undergone an appendicitis surgery.

A team of doctors including Dr Ramesh Singh Bhandari was involved in the appendicitis surgery.

Apart from doctors in Nepal, Indian and Singaporean doctors who were involved in Oli’s first kidney transplant and regular checkups are also said to be in touch and they could join in the surgery in case that is necessary.

Ahead of his second kidney transplant, Oli on Tuesday underwent dialysis to remove possible toxins from the blood, and he is now fasting as advised by the medical team, it is learnt.

Oli had his first kidney transplant at the Apollo Hospital in India in 2007 and went to Bangkok and Singapore for regular checkups.

After Oli was admitted to hospital, his supporters and well-wishers took to social media and his personal website, kpsharmaoli.com.np, to extend their best wishes for a successful operation. Some of his supporters went to various temples to offer worship.

Portraying Oli as a national hero committed to transforming the country, they have wished for his speedy recovery.

“Father of the nation, get well soon,” Shiva Prasad Bastola, a dairy entrepreneur, wrote on Oli’s personal website.

Engineer BR Joshi termed Oli a visionary leader and hoped he will contribute further to make Nepal a prosperous country after his second kidney transplant. “Wishing you a speedy recovery that you will soon be back to doing all things you love in the direction of making prosperous Nepal,” wrote Joshi.
