KATHMANDU, Feb 8: Human rights activist Krishna Pahadi has said corrupt behaviours of leaders, opportunity available to them to escape punishment and impunity have increased a threat to the democratic republic established after a people's great sacrifice and enthusiasm.

Pahadi who is also the founding president of Human Rights and Peace Society warned about this through a press meet here today.

The human rights leader claimed that the involvement of former Prime Ministers Madhav Kumar Nepal and Dr Baburam Bhattarai in the Baluwataar land procurement scam had become crustal clear.

According to him, leader Nepal has a special contribution to the democratic movements at home and Dr Bhattarai is accredited for his role in the establishment of republic, but the same contribution should not be the basis of exemption for them.

The civil rights leader demanded the government include the both in the prosecution process and ensure a judicial treatment on the case. He went on to say that all should accept a decision to be taken by an 'independent judiciary' in regard with a case filed by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) against 175 people including former Deputy Prime Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar who are alleged of their involvement in the scam.

"It is inappropriate for that the Nepali Congress to obstruct the House and send its sister organisations to the street against the CIAA move against the party leader," he said. "However, I welcome the party if it is trying to put a pressure peacefully to bring the former prime minister duo ( Nepal and Dr Bhattarai) under a purview of law ," he said, speaking of the possibility of cooperation from civil society in such non-violent and constructive pressure.
