KATHMANDU, Jan 7: Nepal and China have agreed to enhance cooperation and communication between law enforcement agencies of the two countries for maintaining peace and security across the border.

The two countries made the agreement during a delegation-level talks between Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa and State Councilor and Minister for Public Security of China Zhao Kezhi in Beijing on Monday, according to Embassy of Nepal in Beijing.

Promotion of bilateral co-operation in public security, cross-border crime, capacity-building and border management among other issues were also discussed at the meeting.

This comes in the wake of Nepali authorities cracking down on a group of Chinese nationals involved in crimes both in Nepal and other foreign countries including China itself. A total of 122 Chinese nationals who were arrested on December 23 and released Sunday are to be repatriated.

They were arrested at the request of Chinese security officials.  Two aircraft from China are scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu on Wednesday to take them back, according to immigration officials in Kathmandu.  Director General at the Department of Immigration Eshor Raj Paudel said the arrested will be deported to China after fining them Rs 1,000 each as ordered Sunday by the District Administration Office, Kathmandu.

A press statement issued by the Nepali embassy in Beijing said the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation as agreed by the leaders of the two countries during the exchange of presidential visits in 2019.
