KATHMANDU, Dec 11: With an aim of promoting mountain tourism, 6th International Mountain Day has been observed in capital today.

Nepal Mountaineering Association organized rally from Basantapur which ended at Association's office building located at Jya Nepal on the occasion of 6th International Mountain Day.

On the occasion, the president of Nepal Mountaineering Association Shanti Bir Lama informed that the association has organized the rally to promote mountain tourism and inform people about its prospects. Lama also urged one and all to be united for the prosperity of the country. "This rally is to inform the people about our culture and mountain" added Lama.

43% of total land of Nepal is occupied by mountains and hills where 15% is solely occupied by mountain. In recent years, climate change has posed threat to the existence of mountains.

According to environmentalists, the government and stake holders are unable to monitor the mountaineers properly which has increased pollution in mountains.
