KATHMANDU, Nov 20: The cases of missing children has been going up lately compared to the previous years, a huge cause for concern for the missing persons' families as well as the State.

Altogether 3,422 children -1051 boys and 2371 girls have been reported missing in the last fiscal year 2018/19. This is 1,112 more than the corresponding period in 2017/18, according to a report unveiled by the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens.

The report was released here today. Among them, only 2,540 were found while search for the missing ones was still on, according to the report. A total of 2,330 children- 923 boys and 1,407 girls- had been reported missing in year 2017/18.

The report, however, did not mention how many of them were found later. The apparent increase in the reported cases of missing was due to the lapse on the part of the missing children' parents and gaurdians to report to the police upon finding them, the Ministry said.

National Child Rights Council's chief administrative office Krishna Prasad Bhusal urged the parents/guardian of the missing children to inform police once they are found. Similarly, the number of incarcerated children is on the rise in the country.

There were 65 incarcerated children in various jails in 27 district in 2017/18 while it reached 82 in 2018/19.
