780 kg of garbage collected from Mt Everest area

SOLUKHUMBU, July 14: A total of 780 kg of garbage was collected from the Mt Everest area during a week-long campaign that started on July 1.



The clean up campaign was jointly organized by Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) and Eco Himal Nepal, an NGO working to conserve environment and improve the livelihoods of the people in the Mt Everest. The campaign is organized once every year to spread awareness among the locals. [break]



While 190 kg of trash was collected from the Everest Base Camp area, 200 kg of rubbish was collected from the Island Pick base camp area, said program Officer of SPCC Kapindra Rai. During the campaign, garbage was also collected from Pangboche, Dingboche, Labuche, Thukla and Forche in the Solukhumbu district.

Over 80 people including Ananta Kumar Basnet, administrator at Namche Border Administration Office, SPCC program officer Rai and Lakpa Sherpa, coordinator of Eco Himal at Namche had participated in the campaign.



Plastic, glass bottles and other wastes were collected, informed the campaigners. Some of the waste was burnt down at Labuche in Khumjung while the remaining trash was brought to SPCC for the proper management.



Under the auspices of Eco Himal, 40 trash collection centers have also been set up between Lukla and Khumjung to collect garbage thrown in the Mt Everest area.
