Roundup: Xi Jinping’s two-day sojourn to Nepal (with photos/ infographics)

KATHMANDU, Oct 13: Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a two-day state visit to Nepal on an invitation of his Nepali counterpart Bidya Devi Bhandari.

Xi landed at Tribhuwan International Airport on Saturday afternoon at 5 pm. President Bhandari reached the airport to personally receive her Chinese counterpart.

He directly flew to Kathmandu from Chennai, India where he held an informal summit with Indian PM Narendra Modi. 

Xi, the first Chinese president to visit Nepal in 23 years, was also accorded a guard of honor by a platoon of Nepal Army personnel minutes after landing at the TIA.

Top dignitaries including Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, cabinet ministers, and chief ministers were also present there at the airport.

Xi and his entourage then proceeded to Soaltee Hotel where he stayed for 20 hours during his visit to Nepal.

After having a brief rest at the hotel, Xi rushed to meet his counterpart Bhandari at Sheetal Niwas, the presidential palace. 

Then after, Xi returned to his hotel where Former Prime Minister and the President of Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba and the Chairperson of National Assembly Ganesh Prasad Timilsina paid separate calls on. 

Later on Saturday evening, Xi attended a state banquet hosted by President Bhandari in his honor and his entourage at the same hotel.

On Sunday morning, NCP co-chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal held one-on-one talks with Chinese President Xi. Ruling NCP secretariat leaders Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhalanath Khanal also held a separate meeting with Xi at Hotel Soaltee.

Chinese President Xi and Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli held delegation-level bilateral talks at the same hotel. Xi and Oli witnessed the signing of 18 deals and two letters of exchange to promote bilateral cooperation in multiple fields including physical infrastructure development, railroad connectivity, security and investment.

Concluding his two-day state visit to Nepal, Chinese President Xi Jinping returned home on Sunday afternoon at about 2:00 pm. President Bidya Devi Bhandari bade farewell to her Chinese counterpart Xi at the VVIP lounge, Tribhuvan International Airport. On the occasion, Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli were among those top dignitaries present at the TIA.
