Scrub Typhus claims nine in six months

RATNANAGAR (Chitwan), Oct 19: As many as 631 people have been found with the infection of Scrub Typhus and Dengue diseases across the country. 

According to the details received from different districts during mid-April to mid-October 2016, some 246 people were detected with Dengue infection while 385 with Scrub Typhus, shared the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, Kathmandu. 

Chief of Epidemiology Section under the Division, Dr Gunanidhi Sharma, Chitwan district has the highest score of patients of Scrub Typhus and Dengue infections. 

"Though comprehensive details of some districts are yet to be received, the Typhus infection has been found in 38 districts of Nepal", Sharma informed. "Dengue infection is alarmingly increasing in some districts including Chitwan". 

Dengue has been detected in Nawalparasi, Kapilvastu and Makawanpur beside Chitwan. 

There are 526 patients with the infection of Dengue and Scrub Typhus in Chitwan district alone. Remaining 105 patients of the diseases are only being treated at hospitals in other districts. Among them, 27 were found with Dengue infection and 78 with Scrub Typhus. 

According to Dr Sharma, the Scrub Typhus has so far claimed nine people in Nepal during the past six months. The deceased include two from Chitwan, two from Sankhuwasabha, two from Kailali, one from Tanahun, one from Gulmi and one from Bhojpur. 

Dr Sharma further informed that eight among the 101 people infected with Typhus lost their lives last year. RSS
