KATHMANDU, Sept 13: Police have arrested more than a dozen people over their plans to stage protest against President Bidya Devi Bhandari during her visit to Basantapur Durbar Square to attend Indra Jatra festival today afternoon.

The detainees include Bijaya Raj Bhatta, a former DIG of Nepal Police. Chief of Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu Uttam Raj Subedi told Republica Online that some people were arrested for their involvement in unscrupulous activities.

However, he did not give specific details about the arrestees. Those arrested have been kept at Nepal Police Club at Exhibition Road.

It is learnt that police arrested them to thwart a planned protest against President Bhandari during her visit to Indra Jatra celebrations at Basantapur Durbar Square today.

Earlier, Kathmandu Police had received a tip-off that some people were planning to stage protest against the president for her 'deliberate silence' over Guthi Bill when it was tabled at the Federal Parliament and later withdrawn by the government recently.

Meanwhile, Kathmandu Police has stepped up security around Basantapur Durbar Square to contain possible protests against the president.
