KATHMANDU, Aug 23: Swisscontact has said that it trained 1,780 construction workers in Sindhuli under its 'Skills for Safe Reconstruction Project (SSRP)' in the last two and a half years.

Organizing an event for sharing the experiences of the project that ended last month, Swisscontact—a foundation for international development cooperation—claimed that 84 percent of 1,780 construction workers trained by the project are placed in gainful employment for reconstruction work in Sindhuli.

Tara Prasad Bakhariya, coordinator of SSRP at Swisscontact, the organization not only helped over 26,518 earthquake-affected households in getting information about safe reconstruction, government's housing grants and the procedures to get the grants, but also trained construction workers to rebuild earthquake-resilient houses.

“We worked in both demand and supply sides of the reconstruction in three local units of Sindhuli district. While helping earthquake-affected households by providing information about the grants from the government and its procedures, we also trained thousands of construction workers to rebuild houses,” Bakhariya told Republica.

Swisscontact also said that 108 houses of most vulnerable families were rebuilt by the construction workers it trained as part of the on-the-job training under the project.

Bakhariya also said that the training not only helped to meet the shortage of skilled construction workers to help the reconstruction drive at the local levels, but also increased the income for those trained construction workers.

According to Swisscontact, 5,200 earthquake resilient houses were built combined by the training graduates.

Apart from the trainings to construction workers including carpenters and masons, the foundation also provided 40 vulnerable households a top-up grant of Rs 50,000. According to the organization, 12,979 house-owners have built earthquake resilient houses by employing skilled workers that comply with government reconstruction guidelines.

Bakhariya claimed that 66 percent of 900 graduates of 50 days on the jobs training have increased their income by at least 50 percent while 84 percent of 880 existing workers have increased their income by at least 20 percent.
