House committee urges govt to reconstruct disaster-hit infrastructures at earliest

KATHMANDU, Aug 11: Parliament's Development Committee on Sunday directed the government to start the reconstruction of roads and bridges that were damaged due to the monsoon-induced disasters at the earliest. 

A meeting of the committee urged the government to initiate the reconstruction of those damaged infrastructures as early as possible.

The committee has directed the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport to start the reconstruction said Committee Chair Kalyani Khadka. Likewise, the committee has asked the government to categorize the reconstruction-related works which are under the jurisdiction of the provincial and local levels.

Keeping in mind the upcoming festivals, Chair Khadka asked the government to intensify reconstruction works so that the commuters would not face problems during the festive season. 

Prabhu Shah, a member of the committee, expressed his anger towards the three-tiers of government for not taking the bridge reconstruction works forward smoothly. 

Earlier, Raghubir Mahaseth, Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transport had said that the government would address issues the problems arising in the public transportation sector. Mahaseth said that the provincial and local levels have already started the reconstruction works in coordination with the federal government. 

According to the Road Division, 45 bridges have been destroyed by the monsoon disasters and it requires around 5 billion to reconstruct those infrastructures.
