UN Secretary-General expresses sorrow over plight of flood victims

KATHMANDU, July 16: The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep sorrow over the deadly monsoon-triggered incidents that took place across South and South-East Asia including Nepal, Bagladesh, and Myanmar leaving many people dead, injuring and displacing many others and depriving them of their properties.

“The Secretary-General is saddened by the loss of life, displacement of people and destruction of property due to the heavy monsoonal rains and associated flooding across South and South-East Asia, most notably in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar,” read the statement issued by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General on Monday.

UN Secretary-General Guterres has also offered deep condolences to the flood victims wishing those who were injured in those deadly incidents a speedy recovery.

In addition, he has expressed the UN’s willingness to collaborate with the governments of the flood-hit countries on coping with the flood aftermath.

“The United Nations stands ready to work with the authorities in the affected countries as they respond to the humanitarian needs resulting from this ongoing monsoon season,” reads the statement.
