RAUTAHAT, July 15: Normal life in Rautahat and surrounding areas has come to a standstill following incessant rainfall since the last few days, which has triggered massive floods in rivers like Bagmati, Lal Bakaiya, Jhajh, Lamaha, Chani and Tarahari. All 16 municipalities and two rural municipalities of the district have been hard hit by floods and inundation. According to the preliminarily reports of the local bodies, around 70,000 families have been affected.

Despite such crisis, the government has not been able to carry out rescue operations effectively. The victims are forced to stay under the open sky in lack of shelters. Though water level has receded on Sunday, towns and villages are still sub-merged in water.

According to Rautahat Police Chief SP Bhupendra Bahadur Khatri, five dead bodies were recovered on Sunday after the water level receded.

"Some others are still missing," he said. The deceased were reported missing on Saturday. Floods had washed them away.

SP Khatri further stated that around 70,000 families might have been affected by floods in Rautahat alone. There is hardly any settlement in Rautahat which has remained unaffected by floods. According to Khatri, the victims were rescued in boats and with ropes.

"The situation has eased a bit on Sunday," SP Khatri said. He added that complete details of the losses are yet to be ascertained.
