Ex-IGP Chand surrenders before SC, sent to jail

KATHMANDU, July 4: After being convicted of Sudan scam by the Supreme Court more than two years ago, former IGP Ramesh Chand Thakuri has surrendered before the apex court on Thursday.

Former IGP Thakuri surrendered at the apex court at 11 am. A joint bench of the then Chief Justice Sushila Karki and Justice Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha had issued an order to send them in jail for a year while slapping a fine of Rs 40,000 on April 30, 2017. He had been absconding since the verdict was issued.

Chand filed a curative petition earlier today. However, the apex court dismissed the appeal and sent him to Dillibazar-based jail.

The apex court had convicted three former IGPs Thakuri, Om Bikram Rana, Hem Bahadur Gurung and Ramesh Chanda Thakuri including several other officials of Sudan scam in which the convicts had misappropriated the funds allocated for the purchase of logistics for UN peacekeeping force deployed in Darfur, Sudan.

Sudan scam is one of the biggest corruption scandals in the country where at least 34 police officials and two suppliers were accused of embezzling Rs 290 million.
