400,000 apply at PSC for vacancies at local units

KATHMANDU, July 3: Over 400,000 applications were received at the Public Service Commission (PSC) for 9,161 vacancies at 515 various local units across the country until a few hours before the final deadline.

Applications flooded in at the PSC at the last hour . Many aspirants for the positions were in confusion whether or not there would be recruitment exams as the vacancy announcement was being challenged in court.

The Supreme Court on Monday gave the go ahead for the recruitment process in spite of five different writ petitions challenging the recruitment. Some petitioners had demanded scrapping the vacancies, claiming that these did not ensure inclusive representation .

According to the PSC, 440,163 applications had been received as of 7:45 pm on Tuesday, the last day for applications. The PSC will receive applications online until midnight.

Among the applications, as many as 433,820 were received under open category while 103,386 were under reservations for women, 43,262 under reservations for indigenous and ethnic communities, 24,067 under Madhesi , 3,086 under Dalit, 145 under differently abled and 116 under reservations for other backward classes, informed the PSC.

The commission has received Rs 140 million as examination fees from the vacancy aspirants.

After the PSC computer server crashed under the heavy traffic of aspirants, the regular deadline for applications was extended until June 25. But applications can be placed online until Tuesday midnight on payment of double charges.

Earlier, the State Affairs Committee (SAC) of parliament on June 11 directed the commission to scrap its vacancy announcement, citing failure to address the inclusiveness issue. But the SAC directive was challenged in court, claiming that the parliamentary committee could not direct a constitutional commission.

The PSC had called for the applications on May 29 to fill 9,161 vacant positions at local units. The PSC has never before recruited such a huge number of personnel at one go.
