KATHMANDU, June 28: The US Embassy in Kathmandu in partnership with All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) and We United Project is set to endorse five female youth footballers for the Sports Visitor Program (SVP) of the United States. The announcement was made at a function organized in Kathmandu on Thursday.

Embassy Spokesperson Andie De Arment and ANFA President Karma Tshering Sherpa were present in the program.

SVP is an international exchange program that introduces participants to American culture, leadership, and best practices in sports – from community-based recreational youth play to professional leagues. The course will run for two weeks from June 30 to July 12.

It is managed by the US State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and implemented by FHI 360.

The activities include sessions on nutrition, strength and conditioning, gender equity in sport, disability in sports, and team building exercises.

Speaking at the event, De Arment highlighted the personal action plans the students would implement after their return to Nepal. “Programs like SVP use the universal passion for sports as a way to transcend linguistic and socio-cultural differences and bring people together. Participation in sports teaches leadership, teamwork, and communication skills that help young people succeed in all aspects of their lives,” she said.

During their two-week stay, the participants will be introduced to female sports in the US and celebrate the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup on the field with American peers.
