Tikapur announces women-friendly policies and programs

Daughters born from the fiscal year 2019/20 onward will be provided with Rs 1,000 each month until they reach the age of 20. The beneficiaries can withdraw the amount only if they don't get married until they become 20 years old.

TIKAPUR, June 27: While unveiling budget for the upcoming fiscal year, Tikapur Municipality has introduced lots of women-friendly projects and policies which have been warmly welcomed by the locals.

The municipality has assured 40% participation of women in most of its programs. It has been expected that the involvement of women in development projects and policy making will help avoid irregularities and corruption.

As to eliminate child marriage, the municipality has introduced 'Hamri Chori, Pyari Chori' program. Under this program, daughters who will be born from the fiscal year 2019/20 onward will be provided with Rs 1,000 each month until they reach the age of 20. That amount will be deposited in their respective bank accounts.

The beneficiaries can withdraw the amount only if they don't get married until they become 20 years old.

Similarly, the municipality will make efforts to demolish chhaugoths or huts for menstruating women and abolish the infamous Chhaupadi tradition in which women are banished to such huts during their period. Besides that, various programs will be conducted to uplift the living standard of rural woman. They will be provided with skill development and personality development trainings.

Likewise, married and elderly women will be included in various groups to develop a habit of saving. Single women will be provided with skill development trainings after which they will be engaged in various jobs.

The municipality will give continuity to a special program aimed at supporting pregnant women.

Another program for which the municipality has allocated budget is the project to reduce infant and maternal mortality rate.

Deputy Mayor Keshari Rawal Bista informed Republica that the municipality has prioritized women-friendly programs and policies in the budgeting for the upcoming fiscal year. She says implementation won't be challenging as all these programs will be carried out in coordination with the ward offices.

"It's time to implement women's participation in all development sectors," said Deputy Mayor Bista, adding, "We just want women to make the most of this opportunity."

The municipality endorsed the programs and policies for the next fiscal year on June 22.
