General strike cripples normal life across the country, seven arrested

KATHMANDU, June 25: The normal life across the country has been affected due to the general strike called by Netra Bikram Chand (Biplav) group on Tuesday.

The outlawed Chand-led group called the nation-wide general strike in protest of the killing of its Sarlahi in-charge Kumar Poudel during the police encounter last week.

Major markets, shops, academic institutions, and business organizations in various parts of the country remained closed due to the strike. The government has beefed up security in major cities since early this morning.

Security agencies including Nepal Army defused improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted at 20 places including Kaski, Makawanpur, West-Rukum, and Kathmandu, according to Nepal Police Spokesperson Bishwaraj Pokharel.

The police have arrested seven strike enforcers from different parts of the country, according to the spokesperson.

Meanwhile, public transportation has been partly affected in the Kathmandu Valley while fewer private vehicles plying the roads.

Long route vehicles have been badly affected due to the general strike, according to our local correspondents.
