Chand outfit leader Karki arrested in capital

KATHMANDU, June 25: Police  arrested Nar Bahadur Karki, a leader of the outlawed Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist party of Nepal (CPN), in the capital on Monday evening.

According to the police, a team  from the Metropolitan Police Sector (MPS) Kamalpokhari arrested Karki at around 5 pm from Baluwatar. 

“Karki has been arrested in connection with his involvement in the activities of the Chand-led outfit,” said  DSP Hobindra Bogati. spokesperson of the Metropolitan Police Range Office (MPRO) Teku.

He added that Karki is currently being interrogated. Police have not filed any charges as  yet. “He has been taken to the range office at Teku,” Bogati told Republica.

Karki is said to be a central leader in  Chand’s foreign department. He is also a film producer  “Initial investigations show that Karki is a youth leader of the outlawed outfit,” Bogati said.   

Police stepped up  the arrest of cadres and leaders of the Chand outfit after the government banned the outfit on March 12. So far more than 500 of its leaders and cadres have landed in the police net. 

Two of the party’s cadres have been shot dead by  police. Police claim that they died in exchanges of fire with the police. But family members of the deceased say  they died while under police control. 

Police have arrested three district leaders of outlawed Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) with weapons from Biratnagar on Monday. 

Ashok Rai, Kendra Lal Dhimal and Kansha Dhimal were arrested with an automatic pistol, magazines and 14 rounds of bullets, according to Morang District Police Office. It has been learnt that Rai is the chief of Morang People’s Council of CPN.
