68.6 percent of total population of Nepal found to have developed COVID-19 antibody: Health ministry

Those who are fully vaccinated are found to have developed 90 percent antibodies against COVID-19 while this was 80 percent among those receiving their first dose only.

KATHMANDU, August 30: A national seroprevalence test conducted recently by the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has shown that as many as 68.6 percent of the total population of Nepal are found to have developed COVID-19 antibody.

The MoHP also maintained that the COVID-19 vaccines administered in Nepal are found to be highly effective.

The samples for the tests were taken from both the people who have received COVID-19 vaccine or those who are yet to receive the vaccine.

A sample test conducted among 13,161 people has shown that those who are fully vaccinated have developed antibodies as high as 90 percent against COVID-19 in Nepal. Likewise, the test also showed that those receiving only a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine have developed 80 percent antibodies against the COVID-19.

The sample survey was conducted among the people from July 5 to August 14 to support the World Health Organization. “The tests have shown that the vaccines that we administered against COVID-19 are highly effective,” said Dr Krishna Prasad Poudel, chief of the National Epidemiology and Disease Control Division. 

Vero Cell, Johnson and Johnson, and Covishield vaccines are being administered in Nepal. So far, the number of people given the first dose of vaccines has reached more than 5.06 million while the number of  those receiving the second dose have reached over 4.05 million.
