Globetrotting Lamichhane grabs int’l attention

KATHMANDU, June 20: Cricket sensation Sandeep Lamichhane can truly be said the only Nepali player who remained in the limelight throughout a couple of years. The poster boy of Nepali cricket has emerged as a role model for aspiring youth cricketers across the country. 

He is an example for youths that dreaming big and achieving the target is not impossible if pursued it passionately. Until a few years back, projecting Lamichhane to be in the world stage of professional cricket, it would have been taken as a daydreaming. 

But Lamichhane turned the dream into reality which has not only established himself but also spread a positive message in Nepali youths about the future of the game. His ambition and confidence to fulfill his dream has been the most important aspect for a young prodigy. 

When Lamichhane was unknown to any level of cricket fraternity, the only question about him was how he could make it to the national team. That speaks a lot about his ambition. 

The very question showed him the road to cricket training center in Chitwan. His journey from Campachaur in the past two years has seen take such a flight that he featured in almost all renowned franchise cricket leagues at the global stage. His fame was not only limited in Nepal, but as an emerging star in international cricket. 

Not only Nepali media follows him, but he has also been in attention from media from cricket-popular countries. Of late, the number of followers on social media has become one of the bases to measure one’s popularity. Within few years after he stole the limelight in the cricket, teenager Lamichhane has earned one of the highest number of followers. He has 256,000 followers on Facebook, 131,000 followers on Instagram and 149,000 followers on Twitter. 

His popularity in the past Nepali calendar year has made him one of the five nominees of peoples’ choice award under ‘NSJF Pulsar Sports Award.’ 

Bodybuilder Maheshwor Maharjan, footballer Sabitra Bhandari, badminton’s Prince Dahal and volleyball’s Reshma Bhandari are other nominees of the category. The winners will be decided through Facebook Likes, SMS votings and points given by head coaches of the national sports associations and members of the Nepal Sports Journalists Forum, the umbrella organization of Nepali sports journalists. 

After his nomination in the category he said, ”I have been nominated for the award for the third time and I thank everyone who helped me to get this far,” he tweeted, “I am not sure if I could win this award or not. I thank everyone for the love and support.” 

Making it to the Indian Premier League side Delhi Capitals for the second year in a row was Lamichhane’s most remarkable achievement that paved his way for other important tournaments. He also played in the Australian Big Bash League and Caribbean Premier League of West Indies, Pakistani Super League and the Bangladesh Premier League. 

He was also one of the key players of the Nepali squad that played the historic One-Day International and Twenty20 International. He claimed the highest 24 wickets in the ICC World Twenty20 Asia Regional Qualifiers. He is among one of the very few cricketers to claim 50 wickets in Twenty20 in a single year.
