KATHMANDU, June 16: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said the Public Service Commission was expected to perform, in accordance with its constitutional duties, in such a way which could further foster people’s trust on it.

In her address to a special ceremony organised on the occasion of the PSC’s 69th year here today, the President was of the view that PSC's activities should be capable of further elevating its image, goodwill and prestige and gathering public trust.

The Head –of-the-State said she was hopeful that it would use advanced technology by further improving the examinations system, through which competent and efficient individuals would enter the public service sector. The examination system should be revised being compatible with time.

Stating that the PSC’s work culture based on a schedule and focused on competency, impartiality and fairness was the mantras of its success, the President expressed the hope that the government and all bodies concerned would help make constitutional duties of the PSC more meaningful and strengthened. “The PSC exam system has won people’s faith which continues to exist and I hope that it will get cooperation from all quarters to additionally boost its image and the level of its credence,” she said.

The Head-of-the State expressed her confidence that the PSC would play a crucial role in making sure clean, responsible and strengthened public administration in the situation when the government should own up a historic responsibility of building a prosperous Nepal based on justice and equality, and, which is free from exploitation PSC chair Umesh Prasad Mainali said the PSC carrying a glorious history of around seven decades went through several ups and downs throughout this journey, but now efforts were being made to weaken it, the foundation of people’s trust.

Questions were raised for no apparent reasons regarding the vacancy announcements made by the PSC for local level as per the constitution, laws and established traditions, he said, adding that it, as having the status of the constitutional body, never imagined acting against the constitution and prevailing laws. He was of the view that peaceful, fair, and pressure-free atmosphere was needed for the PSC to work by assimilating the spirit of competency, impartiality and fairness.

As he said, online provisions are in place in all 77 districts to apply for PSC examinations and e-payment system has been guaranteed.

Established on Asar 1 in 2008 BS, the PSC observes Asar 1 as its establishment day. The PSC remains as a specialized constitutional body. The five-member PSC board is headed by its chair.
