Europe visit highly successful: Prime Minister Oli

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli who returned home today after participating in the Centenary Session of International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva, as part of his weeklong Europe visit, followed by his UK and France official visit said his Europe visit was highly successful. Prime Minister said, “We remained highly active during the trip. We raised the issues related to our policies, achievements, necessities, and aspirations in every forum in a relevant way.”

Lawmakers give mixed views about Guthi Bill

Lawmakers attending a meeting of the House of Representatives today have expressed their mixed views about the proposed Guthi Bill. Those representing the major ruling party, Nepal Communist Party, in the Lower House, have defended it, while some others from opposition parties came down heavily on it. The lawmakers defending the document expressed their concerns that there was a melee unnecessarily carried out when it was yet to register in the House, and urged agitating parties not to run after rumours that it would destroy the Guthi tradition and culture.

Yoga Day celebrated in Everest base camp

For the first time, International Yoga Day was celebrated at the Base Camp of Mount Everest, 17600 feet above the sea level. Embassy of India, Kathmandu organized a Yoga Event on Sunday at Namche Bazaar-gateway of Mount Everest, the highest peak of the world. Along with Ambassador of India to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri and Embassy officials and other members from various walks of life of Solukhumbu district participated in the event.

Schools closed to avoid heat

Rising temperature has forced the local administration to shut down schools in Mahottari. The number of schools closing down is increasing along with the rise in the mercury since first week of June. The Sonam rural municipality has issued a notice, closing down schools until June 21. "The intense heat made life difficult of students in schools, with the risk of health complications, hence we had to close down all the schools," rural municipality Chair Raj Kumar Yadav said.

U.N. chief calls on EU to raise 2030 climate goal to 55%

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the European Union to aim for a 55% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, far more than the bloc’s current target for a 40% reduction. With China and India seeking to take center stage at the U.N. meeting after President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris pact, some EU diplomats fear the bloc may become increasingly sidelined on the global deal.

Cricket: Pakistan PM Khan tells players to beat India with mental strength

Pakistani prime minister and cricket great Imran Khan on Sunday urged his country’s cricket team to be mentally strong and take calculated risks to triumph in a crucial World Cup clash with arch-rivals India later in the day. Khan, who led Pakistan to their only World Cup triumph in 1992, is considered one of the sport’s greatest all-rounders and his enduring popularity from his cricketing success with Pakistan helped propel into power in last year’s elections.
